Winter-Spring Development of the Zooplankton Community Below Sea Ice in the Arctic Ocean

چکیده

The impact of the rapidly changing Arctic on zooplankton community structure and seasonal behaviour is not yet understood. Here we examine 6 months under-ice observations from N-ICE2015 expedition (January to June 2015) in Nansen Basin Yermak Plateau north Svalbard. Stratified sampling water column was done with MultiNet during entire expedition, upper 5 m below sea ice performed April-May by divers using a hand-held net. Hydrographic conditions were dominated northward-flowing warm saline Atlantic Water at intermediate depth, southward-flowing cold Polar Surface 100 m. mesozooplankton copepods. Most numerous small ubiquitous Oithona similis 200 m, Microcalanus spp. Triconia borealis further down column. Calanus finmarchicus among species while Metridia longa also numerous. most abundant deep-water copepods Paraeuchaeta Spinocalanus Arrow worms (Chaetognatha) comb jellies (Ctenophora) non-copepods. more dependent surrounding mass characteristics, such as salinity than geographical location. Algal food availability, which closely linked seasonality, explained changes seen surface waters May due ascent recruitment. Seasonal winter spring mostly involved an increase herbivorous C. its nauplii coinciding peak phytoplankton bloom late May. adjacent characterised oceanic North species, many are deep specialists. Despite onset consolidated ice, both successfully reproduced study area. This explains species-rich this region opposed less productive central Ocean. Future prospects earlier will likely be positive for overall secondary production boreal region.

The Arctic Winter Sea Ice Quadrupole Revisited

The dominant mode of Arctic sea ice variability in winter is often maintained to be represented by a quadrupole structure, comprising poles of one sign in the Okhotsk, Greenland, and Barents Seas and of opposing sign in the Labrador and Bering Seas, forced by the North Atlantic Oscillation. This study revisits this large-scale wintermode of sea ice variability usingmicrowave satellite and reana...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Floating Ice-Algal Aggregates below Melting Arctic Sea Ice

During two consecutive cruises to the Eastern Central Arctic in late summer 2012, we observed floating algal aggregates in the melt-water layer below and between melting ice floes of first-year pack ice. The macroscopic (1-15 cm in diameter) aggregates had a mucous consistency and were dominated by typical ice-associated pennate diatoms embedded within the mucous matrix. Aggregates maintained b...

The early twentieth century warming and winter Arctic sea ice

The Arctic has featured the strongest surface warming over the globe during the recent decades, and the temperature increase has been accompanied by a rapid decline in sea ice extent. However, little is known about Arctic sea ice change during the early twentieth century warming (ETCW) during 1920–1940, also a period of a strong surface warming, both globally and in the Arctic. Here, we investi...

Linking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice

The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...
